WHITSUNDAY residents are being encouraged to photograph this
year's king tides as part of an initiative by the national
envirnonmental and humanitarian agency Green Cross Australia,
called 'Witness King Tides'.
Chief Executive of Green Cross Australia Mara Bún, said taking
photos of sea levels could better prepare us for a future where sea
levels are higher than those of today.
"Witness King Tides is about gathering visual data to prepare
ourselves for the future, while at the same time connecting people
to the coast and the environmental issues at hand," she said.
"Given that 85 per cent of Queensland's population lives within
50km of the coast, it is vital that we know what to expect in the
coming years."
The project has been designed to encourage Queenslanders living
near the coast to go out and see firsthand the potential effects of
rising sea levels, and then to share their images online via the
Witness King Tides portal.
Whitsunday residents can witness the next king tide of 4.07metres
at Shute Harbour on Sunday January 22 at 10.09am. Participants can
upload photographs to the web portal at www.witnesskingtides.org,
which also features information on 2012 summer king tide events and
tips for taking photographs.
