Bovis Lend Lease recently hosted a luncheon in support of Green Cross Australia's Build it Back Green Queensland initiative to begin planning how the community can rebuild large scale sustainable infrastructure in the event of Queensland's next major weather disaster.
Green Cross Australia's US affiliate Global Green USA is leading a massive rebuilding green initiative in New Orleans, post Hurricane Katrina. Four years after the storm, the Build it Back Green message in New Orleans is taking America by storm. The world is learning about the urgent need to rebuild safe infrastructure in vulnerable severe weather zones.
The luncheon hosted and sponsored by Bovis Lend Lease brought together property, infrastructure, insurance, research, community and government stakeholders to focus on planning disaster response efforts by reducing our carbon footprint by rebuilding with sustainable infrastructure, a cause Lend Lease is active in supporting through sustainable solutions.
Among the twenty four present were Bovis Lend Lease General Manger for Government and Special Projects Business Unit (Disasters) Tony Orazio, Guy Gibson, General Manager, Government Relations Delfin Lend Lease, Nicole Gamerov, Vice President of Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd, Monica Richter, Sustainability Programs Manager for Australian Conservation Foundation, Adam Beck, State Manager for the Green Building Council of Australia and Mara Bun, CEO for Green Cross Australia.
Andrew Ash, Director for the CSIRO Climate Change Adaption Flagship highlighted to the luncheon guests a pressing and urgent need (in the face of uncertainty) to plan for Queensland disaster events to deal with impacts that occur at local and regional levels and the need to develop adaptive capacity.
After the disastrous Victorian Bushfires, it has been acknowledged that plans must be implemented to not just build infrastructure back quickly, but to build more eco - resilient whilst doing it. Queensland currently faces potential risks such as cyclones and other high impact disasters associated with climate change. A range of organisations including Bovis Lend Lease are therefore active in planning sustainable processes to plan re-building efforts in preparation for the state's next major weather event.
Bovis Lend Lease has a team busy on disaster recovery work and the rebuilding of Flowerdale in Victoria after the Black Saturday bushfires has provided a catalyst to support Green Cross Australia push towards planning for future natural disasters in Queensland.
"This luncheon provided a first step in bringing together stakeholders to discuss planning a resilient and sustainable response to managing the potential impacts of Queensland disasters. Being selected as the Q2 Environment Foundation Partner of the Bligh Government, Build It Back Green will underpin our efforts to support reduced household emissions right across the State", said Mara Bun CEO, Green Cross Australia.
"Through our extensive work in the area of disaster recovery and building communities, we understand the importance of stakeholder engagement and collaboration. The luncheon is an important opportunity to come together and work towards ensuring there is a resilient and sustainable response to manage the potential impacts of Queensland disasters," Peter Ward, Bovis Lend Lease Queensland General Manager said.
